Glossary of Forestry TermsThe following will be an indexed compendium of forestry terms, each term described either from a source, or by my own interpretation of the term. S T U V W X Y Z Use "To Page Top" links to return here Codes: (*) My simplification (a) Silvicultural Terms in Canada Afforestation (a): The establishment of a tree crop on an area from which it has always, or for a very long time, been absent. Agroforestry (me): Forestry and agriculture being carried out on the same land area.
Breast Height (a): The standard height, 1.3 metres above ground level, at which the diameter of a standing tree is measured. Canopy (a): The more or less continuous cover of branches and foliage formed collectively by the crowns of adjacent trees Coppice (a): Natural regeneration originating from stump sprouts or root suckers. Crown Class (*): refers to the relative level of the tops of trees, or groups of trees, in the canopy of a forest. They are differentiated mainly by how much light a tree can receive, and from what direction - from above, from the side etc.
